Hop, Skip, and a Jump. ORD >> CPH >> GOT

The day has finally arrived where we would make our trek to our final destination, Goteburg, Sweden. To try and set ourselves up for a sleepy overnight flight we all woke up bright and early on January 16th and met at the Caf on campus at 7AM. In the wise words of Professor JJ after there was some rumblings about going to the caf he said, “You can’t kill breakfast”, I am here to tell you, that statement is false. Either way we had a solid time hanging out and chatting with our fellow team members.

7AM breakfast at the Caf!

From breakfast we migrated over to the Clausen center for the last class on campus before taking off. Our meeting time to catch the bus was 5:20pm at the Flagpole. The flagpole as you may have guessed, is a well known waypoint on campus. Getting to the airport was an adventure in itself, driving from Carthage to O’Hare in rush hour traffic took a bit longer than expected, but nonetheless we made it to the airport and got through security.

Once we got through security, my full on tourist form came out at gate M13!

We boarded the flight at 9:20PM CST and by 10:13 PM CST we were in the air! The flight lasted 7 hours and 53 minutes. Which is about 22 minutes faster than expected. In flight we were treated to two meals, one dinner and one breakfast. With the lack of sleep I forgot to take notes on what was served, but I did remember to take pictures!

Unfortunately I was only able to get about three hours of shut eye on the flight to Copenhagen, but looking forward, hopefully it assists in kicking the +7 hour time change. When we arrived in Copenhagen, we went through Customs, and then we went to look for our connecting flight. With about a hour and twenty minute we were able to explore the airport a bit, here is a snippet of their facility.

A local bar and bistro with a live plant wall
A local juice and pastry shop
Copenhagen is one of the only airports in the world that has hardwood floors!

We hopped on the connecting flight for 48 minutes and arrived in Sweden. When we unloaded the plane we jumped into 4 different Mercedes Benz 8 passenger vans and sent it west for about 40 minutes and arrived at our Hostel! After we settled in we went to dinner at a local Italian restaurant named Pasta Haus. I had a filet of fresh caught Salmon with potatoes and shrimp mayonnaise.

After dinner we headed to a local pub named Karlsons garage and bar, where we grabbed their nightly special. Bernard Bohemian Lager. It is a lager that is imported from the Czech Republic. It was on special for 40 Swedish Krona. Which is about $4 USD. We’re turning in for the night to get some much needed rest!

Key takeaways

  • Sleeping on planes is difficult but if you can do it, DO IT!
  • Watching The Great Gatsby on a flight is the absolute best choice of movie.
  • Salmon in Sweden tastes exponentially better than it does in the states.
  • Find places with WiFi, and don’t be afraid to ask for the password!

As they say in the business, Skål

(That means cheers)
