Going full Göteborg

Our first full day in the city was intended to get our feet wet and get our bearings with the central landmarks and the way the public transportation works. We started the day off with breakfast at our hostel. It was wonderful! After breakfast, we hopped on a 3 hour bus tour of the city. We visited destinations such as the Feskekôrka which is a fish market but is referred to as the Fish Church due to the building looking much like a church. The Avenyn (The Avenue) is the largest street in the city of Göteborg, it draws in a lot of tourists and night life. It is similar to Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. and the Masthuggskyrkan Church, which is a church that is built on a tall hill overlooking the harbor. It is often used as a landmark for sailors due to it being the first thing you can see when you are entering the port.

Professor JJ bought Smoked Salmon for us to try out. (Very fresh and great flavor!)
A statue of Poseidon overlooks the Avenyn
I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to snag a scenic picture with my Fraternity flag

We ended out tour in the Haga district where we indulged in Cinnamon Rolls the size of our heads! They were for sure a different experience than American cinnamon rolls due to the fact that they don’t add in the frosting to the top of the pastry. Rather they sprinkle some sort of sugar on top of them.

After we filled up on cinnamon rolls we were set free for to explore the city in small groups! I rolled with classmates Ashley, Nicole, Sam, and Cam. We went into a few shops in the Haga district then decided to jump on the tram and go to Nordstan. Which is the largest shopping mall in Scandinavia! They have stores such as H&M, Zara, Tesla, and Hugo Bass. I was scoping out the best deals and the best selection for later shopping!

At 18:00 the shops inside of Nordstan closed and we headed to dinner. The restaurant we stopped at was right in the middle of all the stores. It was a stand alone building and it is referred to as the Palace due to the architecture. John Scotts is a brewery and restaurant. for 99 SEK I got the Bonanza Beef Burger and 44 Centiliters (cl) of the Beer With Me Pale Ale for 69, one of the two beers that John Scotts produces in house. The burger, fries, and beer were all very good, and for 168 SEK ($17.65 USD) it was a heck of a dinner!

After dinner we walked back to our Hostel which was about 6 km in total. Which took about an hour to do, but it was well worth it for getting a better feel for the city and seeing more of the little nuances of the city.

We are planning on heading out to the local pub tonight to cap off a great first day in Sweden!
